The Cotswolds are formed by a limestone plateau and scarp running diagonally from the Mendips in the south-west to the Northamptonshire Uplands in the north-east.

The light, wel-drained, limey soils were easy to cultivate in the Middle Ages, so the area holds some fine  medieval barns built from the local limestone.
