Norfolk

I have now visited four of the great barns in Nofolk. Another one - Paston Barn is the site of an important bat roost so can only be visited at certain times. The other great barn I want to visit is on the Holkham Estate.

Norfolk is famous for its agricultural pioneers. The Norfolk four-course rotation and the work of Thomas William Coke, the first Earl of Leicester at Holkham revolutionised agriculture in England.

Tough times: life in Norfolk, England in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Norfolk was particularly well suited to the export of grain to the continent. By 1794, more grain was leaving the ports of Norfolk for Holland than from the whole of the rest of England.
