Carts & Cart Sheds

Each region had its own style of cart wagon or hay wain. Many of them were built by highly skilled cartwrights or wainwrights and were elaborately decorated.

Well-constructed, eassily accessible cart sheds were important to protect these valuable assets from weather and accidental damage.

Note the “ladders” at the front and rear of these carts. They allowed the cart to be piled higher with hay or grain (still on the stalks). Laden carts would enter through the high entrance doors of the barn. Then the “ladders” would be folded down as in the cart on the right and they would exit via the lower doors opposite.
