Stone or Brick Aisled Barns

Although timber-framed aisled barns are typical of East Anglia and the South-East, aisled stone barns are found in the North, West and Midlands. Although some of them may once have been completely timber, most of them have a tie-beam from the aisle posts to the top wall-plate with no indication of previous wall posts as found in some of the cruck barns and in Titchfield Abbey Barns which had one wooden side replaced with stone from the abbey after the Dissolution.

Two of the Midland barns, those at Great Coxwell (right) and Bredon (below) deserve special mention for their size and the quality of both the timber and stonework.
