Combined Cart Sheds & Granaries

Many buildings on the farm were used for more than one purpose. After all when you have gone to the trouble of building walls and erecting a roof over them you might as well make the most of it. In the Midlands and the Welsh Marches you often find cart sheds with granaries above them. Usually there is a gap between the steps and the doorway to stop rats from getting into the granary.

The granary at Shugborough Hall is built above the mill that used to grind the corn.
