Bedales Lupton Hall

The Lupton Hall at Bedales School was conceived by Geoffrey Lupton (1893-1901). He was an apprentice of Ernest Gimson a well known architect and furniture maker of the Arts & Crafts movement. It was he who designed the Memorial Library and Lupton, who came from a wealthy engineering family provided the funding for a new range of buildings commissioned by the school.

Like the Memorial Library, the Lupton Hall is inspired by the great medieval barns, but in this case it is based on a cruck barn. Four pairs of cruck blades support collar beams between the upper roof purlins and divide the hall into five bays.

The hall seved as a theatre and assembly hall for many years unti the school outgrew it. It remained empty and almost derelict for many years. It was restored as a musical performance venue in 2017. A covered way links the two buildings to the school
