Pitstone Green Farm Museum,
Hertfordshire

The big barn at Pitstone Green Farm is part of the farm museum which is run entirely by volunteers. It is only open nine times a year but it is well worth a visit. The eight bay barn was built c1830. Although it is possible that five bays belong to an earlier barn there is no evidence of this on a map of 1810 (research by Norman Groom, Museum Manager: October 2009). It has an unaisled, timber frame, weather board clad with a tiled roof. Bays 3 and 7 have projecting gabled wagon entries with later outshuts to either side.

The five possibly earlier bays have jowelled wall posts with diagonal braces to the tie beams,  and raked queen posts to the side purlins. The later trusses have lighter, raked and vertical queen posts.
