Although the large grange barn at Ashleworth Quay is called Ashleworth tithe Barn, it is quite likely that this barn was actually Ashleworth’s tithe barn. The tithe was a tax paid by everyone in the parish to pay for the stipend of the Rector and the maintenance of the church. It is a Rectory Farm so it is likely that it originally belonged tot he Rector. One tenth of the harvest would not have required a barn as big as the one at Ashleworth quay and this is only a three bay barn like many tithe barns I have visited. It is a timber frame barn and later than its fifteenth century namesake. However it is still medieval in design with hand hewn timbers and pegged joints.
