Barn at Frating Hall Farm,
Essex

I found this barn on the web and went to visit it on a recent trip in Essex. The owners were happy for me to explore and photograph the barn.

It is an unaisled, timber-framed barn with a new pantile roof and clapboard cladding painted with black bitumenised paint, so typical of Essex. These and various repairs over the years have helped preserve this fine barn.

It probably dates from the seventeenth or eighteenth century, although it may be two barns of different date which were later joined together. Rather than both being on the same side, the two wagon porches are on different sides opposite a lower exit door.

Inside many of the diagonal braces to the tie-beams have been removed and replaced with wooden knee joints. The original raked struts supporting the purlins have in many cases been replaced by queen-posts.
