White House Farm,
Burstall, Suffolk

This barn at White House Farm, Burstall in Suffolk looks very similar to the tithe barn in nearby Sproughton. We spotted it on our return from a few days in Ipswich. We were able to park outside the church so that I could go and look at it.

As you can see from the picture on the right, the barn is still in agricultural use. The tenant was busy muck spreading, but took the time to show me inside.

It is an unaisled, timber-framed barn with the same “knee joints” strengthening the tie-beam/wall-post junction that I observed in the barns at Debden and Westlodge Farm.

These are probably eighteenth century replacements for earlier arched braces to allow higher, wider wagons to pass under the tie-beams.
