While visiting Bruges, I just had to visit the great barn at Ter Doest Abbey. It is only 20 minutes by rail from Bruges to Lissewege and a 20 minute walk from there to the abbey. There is an expensive, but very nice restaurant in the farmhouse.
The barn itself is magnificent. It is similar in design to the barn at Great Coxwell with sub-trusses supporting the purlins midway between the main trusses. It is larger than the one at Great Coxwell, being 56m long by 23m wide and 17.5m high and built of brick. The gable is decorated in the gothic style. It is used as an art gallery and events venue.
