Michelham Priory was an Augustinian priory founded in 1229. During the troubles with France it was fortified by a moat which still survives.
After the Dissolution of the Monasteries it went into secular ownership and was run as a farm for the next 300 years. In 1959 it was bought by a Mrs Stella Hotblack, who gave it to Sussex Archaeological Society. It is now run as a visitor attraction and wedding venue.
The barn was built in the seventeenth century. It is a long timber-framed barn with two wagon entrances and no aisles. There are outshuts on three sides.
