Carlisle Tithe Barn, Carlisle, Cumbria

Carlisle Tithe Barn is unusual in a number of ways; it was built inside the Abbey precincts, which are themselves inside the city and when it was built, the South Side was completely open. This meant that sheaves could be loaded directly into each bay, so there is no midstrey.

It has endured many vicissitudes in its history, but in 1968 the vicar and congregation of St. Cuthbert's Church began to raise funds for its restoration as a parish hall. This was completed in May 1971. It is now used as a venue by local groups. If you want to admire its fine timber framework, check their website for their coffee mornings.
