Abbey Farm Barn, Snape, Suffolk

On a recent visit to Suffolk, I was given permission to visit and photograph the medieval barn at Abbey Farm in Snape. It is interesting for several reasons.

At some point in the past its upper trusses were removed and it was given a gambrel roof (cf. Alpheton Hall Barn). As with many barns, it became redundant after it fell into disrepair.

It has now been repaired, but rather than replacing rotten wood and damaged timbers, it has been supported by custom made steel braces, so that most of the surviving, original timbers were retained. Notice also, the similarity of the aisle posts to those at Abbots Hall Barn in Stowmarket.
