Grange Farm Barn, Spixworth

This is another of the red brick, thatched barns common in this area. The owner lives here and runs a livery stable. Thatching a barn of this size is very expensive so the roof is now clad in corrugated steel. This has preserved the roof timbers and soft red Norfolk brick.

As you can see, the principal rafters and purlins are quite light as thatch is not as heavy as tiles. Modern steel braces have been inserted to reinforce the frame, but some original timbers with carpenter’s marks still survive.
