West Farm Barn

We spotted this barn while taking one of the many minor roads through the Cotswolds. I stopped to take a photograph and fortunately the farmer and his son were in and showed me inside as well.

The barn was built in the seventeenth century, after the house to which it is attached. The walls and roof are of Cotswold stone. There is a hipped-roof wagon porch with a later outshut on each side.

Inside there is a hay loft at one end with a ‘shove hole’ to allow the farmer to toss the hay in from a wagon. The trusses have a simple tie-beam with a collar-beam just below the upper purlins.
