 Alton Priors Wagon Shed

Although, strictly speaking, this is not a barn, I have included it because it shows many of the elements of barn construction and it’s a beautiful old building in its own right. Wagon sheds are often associated with barns. There is another fine example at Haddenham Manor Farm. This one is thatched, with very low walls.

An interesting feature in the construction is the curved under-principal or cranked inner-principal (the curved brace at each end of the tie beam, supporting the collar beam). This can be found in a group of barns built in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, mainly in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and south Oxfordshire.
