The Grove, Norfolk

We spotted this barn as we were driving down a narrow lane near Ingham in Norfolk. On the off-chance I pulled up and fortunately the owner’s son was working in the farmyard. He kindly gave me permission to photograph the barn.

It is an extremely attractive eighteenth century gabled, thatched barn with buttressed walls of Norfolk brick. I found several of these barns in the area. As with the others, it has very light roof trusses with a tie beam at eaves level and a collar beam above it with raked struts to the principal rafters. In some places the braces to the tie beams have been replaced with bolted knee joints.
