Arborfield Barn, C.O.A.M.

Arborfield Barn is a cruck barn rescued from Arborfield and re-erected at the Chiltern Open Air Museum. It was originally built in about 1500. It is similar to the barn at Aylton Court and Cholstrey Court barn at Avoncroft.

However it has no midstrey and the entrance is near one end. Inside is a display demonstrating the various types of thatch that can be used on a barn. This barn demonstrates the advantage of cruck-frame construction. You can clearly see that the weight of the roof is carried through the crucks to the wall plinth. The walls are not load bearing and can be easily replaced.
