Arborfield Barn,
Chiltern Open Air Museum,
Buckinghamshire

Arborfield Barn is a cruck barn rescued from Arborfield. It was originally built in about 1500. It is similar to the barns at Aylton Court and Cholstrey Court barn at Avoncroft.

However it has no midstrey and the entrance is near one end. Inside is a display demonstrating the various types of thatch that can be used on a barn. This barn demonstrates the advantage of cruck-frame construction. You can clearly see that the weight of the roof is carried through the crucks to the wall plinth. The walls are not load bearing and can be easily replaced.
