West Camel Tithe Barn, Somerset

The tithe barn in West Camel, Somerset was built in the fifteenth century, probably as part of a grange belonging to Muchelney Abbey. It stands in the grounds of the Rectory. The round, stone dovecote nearby indicates that the Rector may also have been the lord of the manor, since keeping doves was a prerogative of that rank.

It is a six bay barn with a porch and midstrey to bay four. The end bays have been converted into stables with a hay loft over. The barn is buttressed at the corners and has putlog holes and vertical slits for ventilation. It has a tiled roof, but may have originally been thatched. Inside it has a raised-cruck roof with a yolk or upper collar connecting the cruck blades or principal rafters with trenched purlins between the upper and lower collar beams.
